Kokeshi doll – pretty Souvenir – small (19cm)

Intricate Kokeshi doll from the “creative” era of Japanese doll-making where more detailed shapes and designs emerged, this design is usually made as a souvenir of a particular area in Japan for visitors to take home.

This pretty design has a more defined shape than earlier traditional designs, with protruding hair and carved kimono. There is a pretty hand-painted picture of a Prefecture with Kanji. Near the base the wood has been covered in a dark ink swirl design.

This vintage piece is turned, scribed and painted by hand and has real character, along with some wear that gives it a great patina.

Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
