Kokeshi doll – Zao by Kazuo Ishiyama (石山 和夫) – medium (24cm)

Kokeshi doll created in the Zao style (on the border of Miyagi-Ken and Yamagata-Ken) and one of the more unusual styles found in the UK. This collectible doll is medium-sized at 24cm and is hand-painted by the artist with floral motifs and red stripes.

This piece is turned, scribed and painted by hand. It has the artists signature on the base (Kazuo Ishiyama 石山 和夫) .

Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
