Substantial Kokeshi doll from the “creative” era of Japanese doll-making where more detailed shapes and designs emerged.
This is a souvenir doll made for visitors to a particular part of Japan with the region depicted in the hand-painted waterfall scene on the front. This example unusually large and is made with a mixture of woods including Birch wood with knots and bark showing.
This vintage piece is turned, scribed and painted by hand and has real character, along with some wear that gives it a great patina.
Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
