Really cute pair of ‘Donko Kokeshi’ or ‘Donkokeshi’ that date back to the 1950/60s. These are considered to be the first of the emerging Sosaku (Creative) era of Japanese doll-making where more detailed shapes and designs emerged from 1950 onwards.
This colourful pair are also nodders (movable bobble-heads).
This vintage piece is turned, scribed and painted by hand and has real character, along with some wear that gives it a great patina.
Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available they look great as a collection.
