Good example of a Kokeshi doll from the traditional era of Kokeshi design when these hand-made mementos had a more simple design than more modern ones.
Created in the Togatta style (made east of the Zao mountains in Miyagi Prefecture), this collectable doll is large-sized at 37cm and is hand-painted by the artist with chrysanthemum motifs and red & black stripes.
This vintage piece is turned, scribed and painted by hand and has real character, along with some wear that gives it a great patina. It has the artists signature on the back of the head and more detail on the base.
Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
