Kokeshi doll – Tsuchiyu by Abe Ichiro (阿部 一郎) with squeak – XL (40cm)

Extra large (40cm) hand-made vintage traditional Kokeshi doll created in the Tsuchiyu style. This originates from the Shinchi in Fukushima Prefecture and was made from the 1840s after founder Sakuma Kamegoro created this design which continued through his descendents. Some Tsuchiyu shapes are difficult to create using a reverse-lathe technique.

This piece has been turned, scribed and painted by hand and has the artists signature on the base (Abe Ichiro 阿部 一郎) and faded red stripes with a chrysanthemum motif.

The head on this example squeaks when turned, this was originally designed to imitate the sound of a baby crying.

Dento Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
