Large (30cm) hand-made traditional Kokeshi doll created in the Tsuchiyu style. This originates from Shinchi in Fukushima Prefecture and was made from the 1840s after founder Sakuma Kamegoro created this design which continued through his descendants. Some Tsuchiyu shapes are difficult to create using a reverse-lathe technique.
This piece has been turned, scribed and painted by hand and has real character, along with some light wear that give it a great patina. This piece has the artists signature on the base (Inage Yutaka 稲毛 豊) and multicoloured stripes covering the body.
Dento Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
