Nakanosawa is an uncommon Kokeshi design made originally from the 1920s by Iwamoto Zenkichi, after his and his son’s early death, apprentices formed the Tako Bozu Association to continue to make this style named Zenkichi after the original maker (as with this piece). When this style was originally made it was quite controversial and different from others with the pink and red-surrounded bikkuri-me (surprised eyes) and flat nose. Nakanosawa has recently been welcomed as a new main category of Kokeshi (making 12 in total).
This piece has been turned, shaped and painted by hand and has real character, along with some light wear that gives it a great patina. It has the artists signature on the base (Saito Tokujyu 齊藤徳寿).
Kokeshi are simple wooden toys that have been crafted for more than 150 years as children’s dolls, mementos and good luck charms. These simple but very decorative gems originate from Tohoku-chiho region of North-East Japan. Due to the many different sizes, shapes and designs available, they look great as a collection.
